Use come "HISTORIA" to get 51% off any yearly subscription to World Anvil: worldanvil.com/?c=historia
This video serves as a complete introduction and analysis into how the Romans did war. Their thought process, reasoning, and army compositions are all the focus of the video. Each statement has supporting examples of battles, ranging from the late Republic to the early Empire, though these basic rules were present in some degree in the minds of Roman generals far later, and served as a basis for upcoming generals to learn from.

Totally appreciate the effort you guys went to to collect the data. Im totally with you in most of what you were saying. However, the 3m spacing between legionaries i just don't see as effective. If the front rank in a battle line have to turn around exposing their backs to their opponents with a 3m spacing between their relief, whats to stop their enemies from simply cutting them down? Hence why i believe they still held the tight formations using a simgular smooth rotating maneuver with the fresh troops directly behind. Hard to explain im sorry. Apart from that little problem though, your assessment seems valid.

I love that someone’s finally addressing this. I want to add that most archaic hoplites tended to carry smaller shields than classical era hoplites, probably because of the scale of their conflicts and the lack of massed missile troops and true cavalry at the time. During the classical era, Italian hoplites changed in a different direction, trading the throwable spears for large bladed javelins and fighting at close range with their swords.

Hello HistoriaMilitum, 🤩, I would like to state that according to me, the column is not the largest edifice raised about the Dacians, maybe not even the fortress of Sarmizegetusa, but the triumphal arch of Constantine the Great erected after the battle of 312 on the Milvius bridge. Then and there the future fate of Christian teachings was decided. In the Ingressus scene when Constantine enters Rome, he is accompanied by the Dacian troops with their wolf banners, troops who fought against the Persians under Galerius, the Roman emperor of Dacian origin. I consider that the arch is an edifice that primarily celebrates their heroism on the Milvius bridge. Kudos to your entire team for the educational information..😘

It should also be mentioned that typically lower-ranking soldiers were usually forbidden to marry during their service; the attitude of even the Roman Army being that if they wanted a soldier to have a wife, he'd have been ISSUED one. Still, the soldiers started out as young men, usually teenagers, when they enlisted, and did what soldiers traditionally have done throughout the ages. The Roman Army had its bordellos and "camp followers". Ranking officers like Centurions, OTOH, were usually from the upper class, and of course would marry, and as they usually lived well enough, could bring their families out with them. If a Roman enlisted man was able to survive the first ten or so years of service, in which it was quite possible he might not actually see a major campaign, but there were periods of constant warfare also, which "decimated" (not THE "Decimation" reputed to be employed as drastic punishment for rebellious or cowardly units) the ranks. As with any military, typically the proficient and/or LUCKY survived a few campaigns to become "old" soldiers, and typically by then had earned a few "stripes" (aside from the frequent floggings which was the Roman version of an "Article 15"). Especially if they remained in a certain town or province for some time, they often "shacked up" with a local woman, who became an de facto, if not strictly legal, wife. Far from being discouraged, this actually had several benefits for the Empire. Often men had enlisted in the Army because their prospects at home weren't all that great (is that not typical?), and certainly, other than keeping up with their kin, they had little reason to return...truly, a Roman soldier generally could never "go home", at least permanently. They often learned the local languages and customs, and often had business dealings with the locals as well. Also, there was an expectation that a Roman soldier would be compensated with land of his own to farm, and WHERE was this land going to come FROM? It only made sense that an aging soldier would transition to becoming a well-heeled member of the community somewhere on the Frontier, and help to spread Roman culture. Also, even retired soldiers did serve as reservists for some time; so the Army had a "ready reserve" of experienced, if not fully fit, men in times of emergency.

Hang on, I know it's good info to show what kinds of secondary expenses one might have and be able to cover if needs be, but let's not forget those are *secondary* expenses. Theodorus is not breaking one sandal a week, for example. Looking at only primary expenses, he is generally left with roughly 50 denarii (about 1/3 of his weekly wages) to use as needed. I know it's visible in the video and whatnot, and overall it is excellent to examine this possible case, but you just kinda charged through that to add on imagined additional expenses before recognizing the money that he will be guaranteed not to have leeway with.

A great deal of time was spent building fortifications and trenches. For example, in a certain siege an inner and outer wall of 20 miles each was built, and included elaborate trenches and hazards. That is a lot of effort and work not involving any actual fighting.
